Neighborhood:

Once home to the mansions of the Big Four railroad barons, Nob Hill is steeped (pun intended) in history, evinced by a plethora of significant architectural icons including the ornate Gothic-style Grace Cathedral. Some of the city's swankiest hotels are here such as the Mark Hopkins Hotel, and the Fairmont. The Masonic Auditorium, 1201 California Street, the Pacific Union Club, and the charming Huntington Park are also here.

Streets are dotted with restaurants and nightspots like Top of the Mark with its 360-degree views, Tonga Room and Hurricane BarVenticelloThe Big Four,  Nob Hill Cafe, and also surrounding the hill: Trader Joe’s, Nob Hill Hardware, Brownie’s, and CVS Pharmacy.

It’s a very walk-able neighborhood with every destination on the down-slope (walk down, Uber up). And MUNI and nearby cable car lines make it a cinch to get to and from the Financial District, Union Square, Chinatown, Aquatic Park, North Beach, Polk Street, Pacific Heights and other destinations.

Called “The Big Four,” these tycoons were investors in the Central Pacific Railroad, which brought to completion the first Transcontinental Railroad in the United States. Not surprisingly, they chose ...
